Abstract
LatAm-FINGERS is the first multicenter, non-pharmacological trial in Latin America aimed at preventing cognitive decline and dementia. In this conversation, we will primarily discuss the experience of conducting such a large-scale trial in a region as diverse in social, economic, cultural, and genetic terms as Latin America. We will address key points related to (1) the role of risk factors in explaining cognitive decline, (2) the harmonization of a multicenter protocol, (3) the development of a neuropsychological battery, and (4) the concept of capacity building.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the impact of risk factors on cognitive decline in the diverse context of Latin America, as observed in the LatAm-FINGERS study.
- Evaluate the process of building a multicenter protocol harmonization in LatAm-FINGERS and its implications for similar studies in varied socio-economic and cultural settings.
- Examine the development and application of the neuropsychological battery in LatAm-FINGERS, highlighting its role in assessing cognitive health across diverse populations.

She also serves as a Researcher at CONICET and an Associate Professor of Applied Neuroscience at Maimónides University. Her primary interests lie in the early detection and preventive strategies for cognitive decline, with a particular focus on promoting research in low- and middle-income countries.
Dr. Crivelli plays a pivotal role in LatAm-FINGERS, the first non-pharmacological study in Latin America aimed at preventing cognitive decline through lifestyle modifications. She was recently appointed president of WYLD (World Young Leaders in Dementia), an NGO dedicated to mentoring young professionals in dementia care. Additionally, she serves as the vice chair of AWARE, a professional organization that advocates for women’s leadership in dementia research.
As a member of the Guideline Development Group of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Crivelli has investigated the neuropsychological consequences of COVID-19 and the effects of social isolation.
